A Very Merry 2014 Christmas!!

Christmas 2014 was not without the usual drama and surprises!  Mom said YES to join the Leong-Husseys in Nyack!  Shocking!  But for the rest of us, it eliminated the need to celebrate with her on another day.  Which was a blessing since it's difficult enough to get everyone together for one day, much less two days.

The weather was usually warm.  Traffic was nicely light.  We missed Kris & Baz and it just enforced how important it is to have family all together during holidays.  At least we were able to Skype with Kris which was amazing and had my mother in awe.

Bicky did it again...another incredible feast showcasing a beef tenderloin to die for and loads of sides and veggies to satisfy any vegetarian.  I provided the appetizers: cheese and antipasto platter and pigs in a blanket.  No question that Kathy, the consummate baker would supply the desserts.

Secret Santa went off beautifully.  And I have to admit...I did/do love being the "ring-master" in this whole "game".

Nikki & Tom presenting me with the wedding book was the highlight of my night and year!

2014 at Miss Wendy

This year's Wendy Williams Holiday shows were very selective with audience members.  Winnie scored "the Golden Ticket" and I was lucky to be part of her crew along with her sisters, Connie & Jeannie.

We scored a Nexus 9, a 2 night Foxwood stay and a $100 Google Play card.  Wow!

It's been a terrific month of shows and giveaways...and this was an excellent way to top it off! Thank you, Winnie & Wendy - my two favorite "W's"...:)

Happy Holidays, everyone!!

SBC - On The Talk Show Circuit

We all know of the pub crawl...and the Santa pub crawl...but this last week, I experienced the talk show crawl and it was f-u-n!!  It was also an extended SBC...even more fun!

Winnie & I both had tickets to various shows last week and we were able to attend without doubling up! Goes to show how many shows tape in good old NYC.

Wednesday was my tickets to the hard to get Rachael Ray show.  Because of the holiday season and a more heavily packed audience, we decided to show up 2 hours earlier than check in!  Which is really crazy but we are some crazy ladies!  It was rainy and cold!  But we were part of the first 10 in line.  After numbing fingers and toes and my hair plastered to my head, we were allowed indoors.  At least, we were able to sit and use the restrooms.  And we munched on muffins and bottled water.

Since the show is pre-taped-one never knows beforehand when the airing will be.  We were sdvised our taping would air 2 days later - on Friday.  It was a holiday show and the set was beautifully decorated with Xmas trees and wreaths.  We had a terrific show.  First guest was Carrie Underwood and she gave us her CD.  Next guest was the marvelous Andy Cohen...so down to earth and witty.  Last was Christopher Kimball from America's Test Kitchen.  All very entertaining but admittedly slightly disappointing since we didn't get anything besides the CD.  I think if we weren't teased throughout the show by possible giveaways:  Andy's book...kitchen gadgets and even a Home Depot acknowledgement at the end of the show plus all the glittering and sparkling decor dazzling our eyes and minds...well...it led to a bit of a let down.  No matter...we shook it off.

SBC was celebrating Kathy's day and she had opted for Vietnamese.  With my trusty weekly metro card, I was able to happily travel anywhere all over the city.  Kathy & I also got in a visit with our mom.  We got a lot done in one day!  And there were two more days to go!

Thursday we all met up bright and early for The Chew by Lincoln Center.  7am.  Very different in terms of how they handled us...I arrived first and was about the 5th person in line. I was there 2 seconds when security came and said we could wait inside so as not to be out in the cold!  How considerate - it was very much appreciated.

We had another good show.  Camila Alves (Matthew McConaughey's wife) was on and we were given a $200 Target gift card.  RC Smith is the warm-up guy and one of the better ones.  Carla Hall is warm, personable and she always comes into the audience to dance between segments.  I love going to this show because we get done by 10:30 and we have the rest of the day free.

Friday - another day, another dollar...yeah...it's like having a job. But a rather interesting one.  You sit and get entertained...what's not to like?  This time we met at Rockefeller Center for The Meredith Vieira Show.  Their check-in is very unique.  Everyone waits outside the NBC Experience store that opens at 8am...(so we were there by 7am).  When the store opened, we headed upstairs to the 2nd Fl where we got checked-in, received a wristband bracelet and a lanyard that has a map and the time when you should return to go into the studio.  It's an hour later so we took that time to go get coffee and a doughnut and make a restroom stop.

Our lanyards said to return at 9:10 which we did.  I really like this procedure.  The downside?  It's a long day of taping.  We didn't get out until 12:30pm.  The warm up person works hard - there's a lot of down time between segments.  On this day, we received bluetooth speakers.

Connie went home to beat the Friday traffic back to Jersey.  Winnie, Kathy & I took the train back to my neighborhood and feasted at our favorite sushi place...Tony joined us!

This is not something I would want to do every week but once or twice a year...love it!  I was particularly excited about the SBC being at Rockefeller Center so we could get a shot of us in front of the iconic tree.  It's all about that holiday spirit!  :)

Thanksgiving with a Different Family

I think I have had to ruminate (more my mom's thing than mine but here it is) about my Thanksgiving this year.  So many pros and cons.  Main con:  not being with my family.  Main pro: being with Nikki & Tom.

I knew this year we wouldn't have Nikki & Tom.  We had them last year and it is fair that they alternate holidays.  All the same...it was sad for me to think I wouldn't be with them during their first "as a married couple" Thanksgiving.  Then it was settled that Kris & Baz wouldn't be coming up so Kathy & Tony decided to stay in Florida.  That left me, Bicky and her family and mom.  As I tried to plan things with Bicky, I received the invitation from the Favilla family to join them.  It was a tug-a-war for a moment but in the end, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.  First Thanksgiving that I didn't prepare the turkey, buy all the groceries and be with at least, one of my sisters.  Very strange indeed.

It was also surreal to play the "mother-in-law" part.  Because Tom & Nikki drove me to his Aunt Gloria's house on Long Island.  I was in the back seat!!  It's rare these days for me not to be the driver!  But I was grateful that he did insist on it since Aunt Gloria lives out of the way and there were many twists and turns before getting to her house

Gloria and Frank live in Bayville which is located on Long Island Sound overlooking Connecticut. It's a village within Oyster Bay.  Their deck looks out onto the water.  It was quite lovely.  Maryanne, the oldest of the Favilla siblings greeted me first and the party was on.  Here's the rundown: Maryanne (Mary) is married to Buddy and they have 2 children:  Donna and John.  Donna is married to Frank and they have 2 children: Frank (7) and Gia (5).  John is in a long term relationship with Laura who happens to be Yo Yo Ma's niece and had attended LaGuardia Music and Art. And yes, Nikki & she have mutual friends.  All the above were present at the dinner.

Next is Diane, 15 months apart from Mary.  She is married to Ed.  There was a brother, Vinny who drown when he was 11. There's Gloria and Frank.  Then Joe who live out in California and the last 2 boys, Ralph (Tom's father) and Frankie (Tom's best man's Michael's father).  Joe & Frankie were not there.  All night long, I kept trying to keep everyone's names in my head.  I'm not that young anymore!  There were 16 of us and Mary, thankfully, kept close to me.

As anxious as I felt prior to arriving, by the end of the evening, it was delightful and everyone made me feel very comfortable.  Frank, who is quite the cook and Gloria were consummate hosts and the food and drink kept coming.  I got to know the family and much of their history but I am sure with 6 siblings, there are many more stories to tell.

I Done Good!

This year's American Express Small Business Saturday felt a bit like a scavenger hunt...at least for me.  I had a list of where I wanted to go...what I wanted to buy and limited everything to about $10.
I had registered 3 Amex cards and with 3 $10 cash back allowed on each card. I had 9 different transactions to go for.  It took 5 hours to complete my "quest" with a lunch break in between but in the end...well worth the effort!

I took my car.  And was glad I did because it's amazing how heavy a few bags can get!  I was able to find free parking near 63rd Drive and walked the 3 blocks down to Queens Blvd.  My first stop was Lot-Less.  I thought I would be in and out but no...not what happened.  I had wanted to get a new iPad cover but they didn't have anything I liked so now I had to browse the aisles.  I ended up getting 3 pairs of readers, (which I always have use for), a 3-pack of socks and emery boards. The total came to $10.68.  Which meant I would only be paying 68 cents.

I went next door to Ben's Best and got a pastrami on rye...$14.10.

Next was Rego Bagels - a store that I must have passed hundreds of times and never visited.  Picked up a dozen assorted bagels for $10.20 and their dozen comes out to 15 bagels!  I will have to share...I can't eat 15 ...uh...14 (already ate one) bagels!

Across the street is Planet Wings and I picked up an order of 15 Teriyaki boneless wings for $13.05.

With the bagel purchase and the pastrami, I needed a supermarket.  I wanted to pick up cream cheese and club rolls.  But none of the ones in the area were participating so I went home to have lunch (eating one of the bagels which was very good!) and researched what other stores I could go to.  I was thrilled to discover that Good Fortune - my favorite Chinese Supermarket was on the list.

After my short break, I drove back to 63rd Drive where I made another run at LL...getting a scarf and pancake mix for $10.98.  Then I drove to Good Fortune.  I picked up my favorite oyster sauce (the expensive kind and the biggest bottle they had) - a rib-eye steak, cream cheese, club rolls and Haagen Daz ice cream bars.  I did 2 separate transactions...one $10.11 and another at $10.48.

My last and final (I wasn't able to do all 9) was Manny's for their Bandeja Paisa dish @$13.35.  A heavy loaded dish of grilled top round steak, pork rind, rice and beans, sweet plantain, avocado and a fried egg! Happy dance, anyone?

The best part?  Each time I made a purchase - Amex emailed me thanking me for participating which pretty much means...I will be getting my $10 rebates!

My total charges came to $92.95 but I should only be out of pocket $12.95.

Going to go eat now. And for a long time after....:-)  I did my part for small businesses!
